Oh friends. What a year it’s been. For many this has been a tumultuous year. We’ve certainly bared witness to heart ache and stormy weather this year, but after looking through what has become our favorite work related task (collecting what we feel are our strongest images from the year) we are reminded that there is a whole lot to celebrate this year too. And it’s not the pretty wedding details, but real, messy, living and breathing love. From trembling hands that ring their beloved to tiny kicks that wait to be loved and the sugar high induced tantrum that cuts the shoot short – this is life-giving work. It is our great pleasure to bear witness to our clients friends lives. To capture who, where and what you love. We are filled with gratitude to document some of the most tender, vulnerable and joy-filled events in life. The joy rubs off on us too, and for that we are eternally grateful. Let’s do this, 2017.

Be still my heart! If there is such thing as sunshine on the internet, this is a close as it gets folks. I had the honor of photographing Krista for some updated headshots and yoga photos for her website that is in the works. Krista is an accomplished vocal performer, yoga instructor and all around […]

If there is such thing as sunshine on the internet, this is a close as it gets folks. I had the honor of photographing Krista for some updated headshots and yoga photos for her website that is in the works. Krista is an accomplished vocal performer, yoga instructor and all around grounded and wonderful person. We went to college together, and it’s always great to see how people who majored in the performing arts in college are incorporating their craft into the “working world” almost ten years after graduating. Freelancing has its challenges and perks, but everyone I know who is practicing their art has additional jobs to support themselves. For some (myself included) that supporting gig becomes a very important part of the journey where the practice informs their original training and vice versa. Krista has made quite a name for herself in the Yoga community and has found a way to meld two loves into a beautiful life. For this shoot, we wanted to incorporate some of Krista’s many loves into photographs for her to share on her site. Since she loves spending time outdoors, we had to find a beautifully simple outdoor space to take photos of her practicing yoga. Her dog Askel joined in on the fun and I just LOVE the images of the two of them together. For the second part of the shoot we went to our studio in Lowertown where we took some more traditional head shots as well as some fun ones on her bike (her preferred method of transportation). This was such a fun shoot and it was an honor to spend time with such a vibrant person. Thank you for allowing me to capture your beautiful self, Krista! So many good things are in store for you.

For those of you still hanging around at the end, let’s start with a high-five for being able to process all those images. We are well aware that this little annual tradition of our images in a yearly review format is entirely too big. Believe it or not, this is a highly edited version of some of our favorite images for the year. I suppose that’s what happens when we shoot more than 50 weddings in a year, not to mention even more portrait sessions. There is just so much LIFE and LOVE that we get to witness! It’s such an honor, guys.

Now you get to read our little acceptance speech of gratitude. First of all, none of these photos would be possible without the beautiful clients we get to have in our Summer Street family. Their lives and love are our constant inspiration, and without that we’d just be taking photos of pretty things with no substance. Next up, our team of dedicated photographers. Of course Matt and I started this whole crazy business, but we’ve picked up Chuck and Abby along the way as our sensationally talented Associate Photographers, and much of what you see above is their talented work as well. Next up we have the privilege of working with some of the finest in the industry as our second shooters and assistants for some weddings; Ashley, Katie, Deb, Bella, Dan, Olivia, Ellie, Jean and Vina – your talent behind the lens is clearly phenomenal and we’re honored to call you peers. We are hybrid shooters (film and digital) so we have to thank our talented film lab, Richard Photo Lab, for their expert work in the dark room. This year we hand-trained a new talented digital editor as well. With the influx of a new market in the Midwest, Matt and I needed back-end support to help us deliver beautiful, consistent images to our clients in a timely manner, and we knew bringing an in-house editor to help us would be just the thing. Laura is now part of our team and has been an integral part of our back-end this year and helps all our images become what you see on our site. Talk about a talented group!

We have captured love in many places this year. From sandy beaches to historic estates. Ornate houses of worship and cathedrals in the woods. Childhood homes and mountain tops. All across New England and the prairies of the Midwest, we’ve gotten to step back and capture lives full of love. We’ve been able to tell their stories through photos that they will cherish for years to come. We are completely honored to call this work, and we toast to you all for supporting us along the way. Here’s to 2015!

Threads Dance Company

You know when you leave work feeling like you got to play the entire time, that it’s a good thing, and that you’re right where you need to be. Many of you know that I am also a dancer, so as you can imagine, photographing dance rates high on my creative endeavors. In fact, I’d […]

You know when you leave work feeling like you got to play the entire time, that it’s a good thing, and that you’re right where you need to be. Many of you know that I am also a dancer, so as you can imagine, photographing dance rates high on my creative endeavors. In fact, I’d go as far to say it’s my favorite thing to photograph. I had a great time with Minneapolis based, Threads Dance Project a few weeks back in the studio and had to share some of my favorites here on the blog. Aren’t they beautiful? I can’t wait to check out their show at the Cowles Dance Center later this fall. Thanks for having me, Karen and your beautiful dancers. You guys are the best!

This session lights me on fire. Dance and Photography (and this talented lady) are some of my favorite things in life. You may remember Stephanie from her sweet wedding last fall. In addition to throwing an adorable and heartfelt wedding, she spends her time working as a professional dance artist, massage therapist and Osteopah in training. When she approached us to capture some headshots for her, we jumped at the chance. Once we got in the studio we couldn’t help but break out into some dancing, which turned out to be one of the best parts of her shoot. When we take headshots of talented folks like Stephanie, we like to try to dig a little deeper than just a mugshot of the person. We try to highlight them in their element, so it was only natural that we get some photos of her dancing. Stephanie is sweet, gentle and loyal. Her grounding presence sets her apart from other performers and therapists. We have a big place in our heart for Steph, and were honored to have the opportunity to photograph her.
